Two more years — Liverpool and Mo Salah reach agreement

It has finally happened as Mohamed Salah and Liverpool have agreed “in principle” to be contracted to each other for two more seasons.

This means that the Egyptian will sign an extension with Liverpool pending the clarification of a few key details in the new contract.

Mohamed Salah joined Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017 and has grown into one of the Premier League’s best and most iconic players. From nearly breaking the season goal scoring record to leading Liverpool to multiple titles alongside Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino, to becoming a golden boot winner and entering the top ten for Liverpool and the Premier League’s all-time scoring list as well as the top 10 for the Premier League’s all time assists list, the Egypt national football team captain is arguably the best player to have worn the colours of the Kop in this century.

This season, he has notched 20 goals and 17 assists in all competitions with more than 20 matches in all competitions still to come. The Reds, who were adamant about offering him a new contract for many reasons including his age – the former FC Basel man is 32 years old – have now seen the folly of their ways and have reached an agreement with him.

The details of the contract are still under wraps but the length of the contract has been revealed to be two years. This means that Salah will remain at Anfield until he is 35 years old at least.

This will come as bad news to Paris Saint-Germain and clubs in the Saudi Arabia Pro League who were eyeing a swoop for Salah in case he failed to reach an agreement with Liverpool. He would have been free to enter into discussions with them from 1 January 2025 but this agreement has come between his party and the interested clubs.

It remains to be seen what the club will do about the little disagreement in their new contract for Salah and if they will be willing to increase his current salary, as this was believed to be the chief reason for the sluggish contract talks.

Meanwhile, they are gearing up to lose Trent Alexander-Arnold who has decided that he wants to go to Real Madrid.

Like Salah, Alexander-Arnold is out of contract with Liverpool at the end of the season and was waiting for word on a new contract. He would end up making a decision to see out the rest of his contract in order to make the move to Real Madrid according to multiple sources.

This has woken Liverpool up, who have now gone on the offensive in trying to get the player to commit to a new contract. It remains to be seen how it will all play out but the Salah agreement could play a big role in convincing both Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk, who is also out of a contract, to stay at the club.
