Tough start for Pochettino at the helm

Mauricio Pochettino’s early tenure as head coach of the United States men’s national team hasn’t delivered the smooth transition many had hoped for. Since his appointment in September 2024, the team has experienced a turbulent spell, with disappointing performances casting a shadow over early expectations. Losses to Panama and Canada in the Nations League, followed by defeats in Gold Cup preparation games against Turkey and Switzerland, raised serious concerns about the direction of the team.

Although those matches were only friendlies, the inability to compete effectively against European opponents added to the pressure. With the 2026 World Cup approaching fast, fans and pundits alike began questioning whether progress under Pochettino was truly being made.

Gold Cup brings a glimmer of hope

Despite the setbacks, the U.S. team has shown signs of a turnaround during this summer’s Gold Cup. A run to the final has offered some relief to fans, with a potential win over Mexico providing a chance to claim silverware and boost morale. More than just a trophy, victory would represent a crucial step in restoring confidence and direction ahead of the World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host next year.

Such a result could mark a shift in momentum and help solidify belief within the squad. For both Pochettino and his players, success in the final would be a timely reminder that their efforts are beginning to pay off, even if progress remains fragile.

Unsettled squad, uncertain progress

A key issue during Pochettino’s first 10 months in charge has been the lack of stability in squad selection. Across 15 matches, 55 different players have featured, making it difficult to establish rhythm and cohesion. With frequent changes in the roster—many of which were outside the coach’s control—the team has struggled to build consistency in either performance or results.

The USA is still searching for its first win under Pochettino against a top-30 FIFA-ranked team, underlining the challenge that remains. With just one more competitive match scheduled before the World Cup, time is running short to answer key questions and lay down a solid foundation for the tournament. The road to 2026 remains uncertain, but a Gold Cup triumph could offer the stability and belief this team so urgently needs.
