Tottenham close to Tel deal

Mathys Tel is on the brink of making his stay at Tottenham Hotspur permanent, with multiple reports confirming that talks with Bayern Munich are in the final stages. The 20-year-old forward spent the second half of the season on loan at Spurs, during which the club claimed the Europa League title. Despite their European success, Tottenham struggled domestically, finishing a disappointing 17th in the Premier League table.

The proposed agreement is reportedly worth €35 million in addition to the €10 million already paid for the initial loan. While Tel’s temporary move included a €55 million buy option, Tottenham were able to renegotiate the terms and reduce the overall fee. Both clubs are said to be in advanced discussions, with a full transfer now looking increasingly likely.

Support from new leadership

Despite a managerial shift at Spurs, new head coach Thomas Frank is keen to keep Tel in the squad. According to Sky Germany, the Danish manager values the young Frenchman and sees him as a key part of Tottenham’s long-term plans. His endorsement has helped maintain the club’s pursuit of a permanent deal, even amid changes in coaching personnel.

Tel’s stint in North London allowed him to showcase his skills on a bigger stage, contributing to Tottenham’s successful Europa League campaign. His performances during that period appear to have cemented his place in the club’s future vision, regardless of their league struggles.

Bayern career and missed opportunities

Tel joined Bayern Munich from Rennes in 2022, quickly emerging as one of the more promising talents in their squad. Over two seasons with the Bundesliga side, he made 83 appearances and scored 16 goals. Despite his potential, Tel often found himself on the fringes of the squad under both Thomas Tuchel and Vincent Kompany.

Although he possessed the attributes to act as a reliable deputy to Harry Kane, consistent first-team chances were hard to come by in Munich. His move to Tottenham has provided him with a more prominent role, and now, a permanent transfer could offer the continuity he lacked in Germany.
