The Daniel Levy-led administration of Tottenham Hotspur and new manager Ange Postecoglou look set to clash over transfer dealings in the coming weeks.
Spurs are still looking for a replacement for Harry Kane, who joined Bayern Munich last week. A number of names have been touted, including Nigerian forward Gift Orban, who was on the scoresheet for KAA Gent on Sunday in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
Reports now claim that the more experienced Romelu Lukaku has popped up among the Spurs administration. The reports also claim that the North London club have contacted their West London counterparts over the possibility of signing Lukaku.
This, it is understood, is despite the Australian manager’s communication to the club that he wants to sell more players first before adding any new ones, even a Harry Kane replacement.
Postecoglou, who joined Spurs from Scottish Premiership side Celtic during the summer, said that his squad is bloated just before he led them out to secure the club’s first victory over Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“We can’t just keep acquiring players when we’ve got too big of a squad as it is at the moment,” Postecoglou said in the pre-match press conference. “It affects your training, it affects players themselves because ultimately they want to play and be involved.
“It’s not so much one has to happen for the other but our focus at the moment is to try to trim the squad down and then see where that takes us in terms of reinforcements.
“We’re constantly assessing that on a daily basis and there’s still two weeks to go in the window. I’m sure you’ll see some movements.”
These comments seem to have fallen on deaf Spurs administration ears as they have now gone ahead to hold exploratory tals with Chelsea over signing Lukaku.
The Belgian striker is an outcast at Chelsea after his blockbuster interview that shook the club to its core. He spent last season on loan at Inter Milan in the Serie A and was close to joining them on a permanent move until the club found out that he had talks with Juventus as well.
The perceived betrayal made the Nerazzurri pull out of the race to sign him, leaving him in Limbo as Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear to him that he is not in his plans for Chelsea.
Lukaku has now been training alone and looking for an exit from the club. Spurs are now the latest to be linked to him but he is already facing a stiff move as Postecoglou has shown clearly that he is not interested in the player.
It remains to be seen what will become of Lukaku’s future in the coming weeks.
