Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has backed Arsenal, managed by City’s former assistant manager Mikel Arteta, to pry the title from City’s hands this season.
Aguero, who left Manchester City for Barcelona in 2021 after ten years of record breaking achievements, but was forced into retirement in his third month at the Catalan club due to a heart condition, believes Arteta’s squad is strong enough to go toe to toe with his former club.
Arsenal’s start to the season is still being viewed as lucky with many believing that the turn of the year will see Manchester City regain their spot at the top of the table and Arsenal revert to old ways. Agueo has dismissed those concerns.
He told Stake.com: “Arsenal have had a great performance in this stretch and Man City, despite the setback against Liverpool, remain close. We’ll see what happens after the World Cup.
“Arsenal have a deep squad. More than anything because they know what style they want to play and it shows that they are hungry for triumphs.
“There is also the possibility of incorporating in the winter market and if Mikel Arteta sees that he needs some reinforcement – as other teams will too – then he will ask for them.
“But since you’re asking me about Arsenal, look at what happened a few days ago when Bukayo Saka was injured. Reiss Nelson came on, a player that no one had in their plans – it is clear that Arteta did – and he was the star of the match.
“So I don’t think Arsenal have a short squad.”
Aguero also believes that Liverpool, who have syruggel8this season, are still in the running for the title and that it will be foolish to rule them out. The Reds have only managed to win five of their 13 games played so far to keep them in eight place on the log.
The Manchester City all time leading goalscorer still has faith that they can come back to challenge despite what has been their poorest start to the season in o er five years.
“If there is something that the Premier League has shown over the last few years, it is that nothing should be taken for granted.
“And even more so with a team like Liverpool, who had the misfortune of having many injured players in this part of the season.
“I always give the title that we won with Man City in 2012 as an example. We were eight points behind Man United, there were few games left, we managed to come back and win the title in the last minute on goal difference.
“That’s what makes it such an exciting competition.”
