The use of semi-automated offside technology is set to make its first appearance in English domestic football during the upcoming fifth round of the FA Cup. This system will be active in seven matches held at Premier League venues, marking a significant step in its implementation.
New technology enhances decision-making efficiency
The Football Association has confirmed that the technology will be deployed in select FA Cup fixtures. The system, designed to improve the efficiency of offside decisions, uses optical tracking to determine player positions and generate virtual graphics.
While the introduction of semi-automated offside technology does not alter the accuracy of referee decisions, it aims to quicken the decision-making process. Additionally, it is expected to enhance the experience for both in-stadium spectators and television audiences.
Premier League set for future implementation
Following successful trials in the FA Cup, the Premier League is expected to integrate the system later this season. Initially scheduled for introduction in October 2024, its rollout was postponed to allow further testing. Premier League clubs had unanimously agreed to adopt the technology for the 2024-25 season.
The system has already been in use in European competitions, with UEFA incorporating it into the Champions League at the beginning of the 2022-23 season.
VAR and in-stadium announcements to feature in fifth round
Alongside the semi-automated offside technology, video assistant referees (VAR) will be active in all eight FA Cup fifth-round matches. This includes the fixture at Championship side Preston, where match officials will also provide in-stadium VAR announcements.
The FA Cup fifth round is set to take place on the weekend of Saturday, 1 March, with these technological advancements expected to play a key role in officiating decisions.
