Malang Sarr’s time at Chelsea concluded this summer, marking the end of a four-year chapter with limited impact. The 25-year-old defender, who now represents RC Lens, has no regrets about his time at Stamford Bridge, as he shared with L’Équipe. Sarr joined Chelsea in 2020 on a free transfer from OGC Nice, where he had developed as a player. However, he struggled to secure regular opportunities and was loaned out to Porto and AS Monaco during his time with the London club.
His final season at Chelsea proved particularly challenging. After returning from Monaco in 2023, Sarr found himself on the sidelines under new manager Mauricio Pochettino. With a wave of fresh signings and no room for him in the squad, he didn’t make a single appearance throughout the 2023–24 season. Ultimately, Chelsea and Sarr mutually agreed to terminate his contract at the end of the campaign. Over four years, he made just 21 appearances for the Blues.
No Regrets Despite the Challenges
Reflecting on his Chelsea spell, Sarr maintains a positive outlook. While acknowledging the difficulties he faced, the Frenchman refuses to dwell on what might have been. “It would be strong to say I was a victim of football business, but I’ve paid the price for it,” Sarr explained. He expressed that his struggles were not the result of poor performance or character issues but rather circumstances beyond his control.
Though he admitted that his time at Chelsea felt like “lost time,” Sarr holds no bitterness. Instead, he sees it as a period of growth and learning. “Regrets? None,” he said, emphasizing his focus on the future and making up for the years he felt were unproductive.
A Fresh Start at Lens
Now at Lens, Sarr is determined to rediscover his rhythm and fulfill his potential. The defender is committed to seizing the opportunity to play regularly and contribute meaningfully to his new team. While his Chelsea experience may not have gone as planned, Sarr is using it as a stepping stone to move forward in his career.
With a new chapter unfolding in Ligue 1, the former Nice player is optimistic about what lies ahead as he strives to leave his mark at Lens.
