Sandro Tonali considers Serie A return amid Newcastle struggles

Sandro Tonali, the 24-year-old Italian midfielder, is reportedly evaluating options to return to Serie A after facing challenges at Newcastle United. According to Carlo Laudisa of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tonali’s reduced role under Eddie Howe has left him feeling unsettled at the Premier League club.

Despite being a key player for Luciano Spalletti’s Italian national team, Tonali has seen limited starts for Newcastle this season. Out of 13 league appearances, he has come off the bench on seven occasions, accumulating around 650 minutes of playing time. This reduced involvement has raised concerns for Tonali, who is eager to secure more regular action to improve his form.

Loan move could be a solution

While a permanent transfer remains unlikely due to his long-term contract running until 2028, a loan move could be a viable option. Tonali is reportedly exploring this possibility to facilitate a return to Italy, where he could aim for consistent game time.

AC Milan, his former club, has emerged as a potential destination, but his high salary of €9 million net per year poses a significant challenge. Serie A clubs may struggle to cover his wages fully, complicating the chances of a reunion with the Rossoneri.

Juventus and Inter monitoring the situation

Other Italian giants, such as Juventus and Inter Milan, have expressed interest in Tonali’s situation. Both clubs are reportedly keeping a close watch on developments and could become key players in negotiations if Newcastle shows willingness to entertain a loan arrangement.

Tonali’s future could be a central topic in the January transfer discussions, with his ambition to return to Serie A shaping the next chapter of his career.
