Arsenal center-back William Saliba has confirmed he has agreed to a fresh five-year contract, saying his decision was heavily shaped by Mikel Arteta and his backroom staff.
The 24-year-old France international, previously contracted until June 2027, had been linked with interest from Real Madrid. He explained that the club’s coaching team is crucial for his progress and ambition to reach elite levels.
“The manager is one of the best in the world,” said Saliba. “He and his staff have supported me a lot. I’m still young, and I haven’t reached my full potential. I know they will help me become one of the top defenders and achieve success with this team.”
Rise at the club
Saliba moved to Arsenal from Saint-Etienne in July 2019, returning on loan to the French side for the 2019-20 campaign before further spells with Nice and Marseille.
He finally made his debut in August 2022 and has since become an important figure, recording 105 league appearances, six goals, and two assists.
Arteta described the defender as a key part of his side’s progress, adding: “He has developed enormously since joining us, taken on responsibility and built a strong relationship with the fans and the club. There is still much more to come.”
Long-term squad planning
The Frenchman is the second central defender to secure a new deal this year, following Gabriel Magalhaes, who signed until 2029 in June. Arsenal see their partnership as the foundation of the team’s defensive stability.
The new agreement was confirmed shortly after a dramatic victory at Newcastle that kept Arsenal in second place, only two points behind leaders Liverpool. Sporting director Andrea Berta said Saliba’s development has been remarkable and described him as “one of the best in the world.”
Reaction from players and pundits
Former Liverpool and Wolves defender Conor Coady, now with Wrexham, called the extension a vital move for Arsenal. He said Saliba always performed beyond his years and stressed that rival clubs such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid would have been difficult to turn down.
“Arsenal will be thinking, ‘thank God he has signed,’” Coady told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Keeping players like him in the Premier League is massive for English football.”
Strategic importance for Arsenal
Securing Saliba’s future is viewed as one of Arsenal’s most important pieces of business, alongside their broader squad-building strategy. Negotiations were long expected to succeed, with the defender himself hinting during preseason that he would “hopefully” renew.
Saliba’s partnership with Gabriel is considered one of the strongest in the Premier League, particularly influential during set pieces. Arsenal have now secured the majority of their core squad on lengthy contracts, with Bukayo Saka the main player yet to finalize an extension.
The club’s direction is clear: its leading talents believe they can achieve the trophies they desire in north London.
