Ryan Gravenberch withdraws from Netherlands squad due to fitness concern

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has pulled out of the Netherlands squad due to a fitness issue, as confirmed by the club on Wednesday. The Dutch international was originally called up by head coach Ronald Koeman for the upcoming Nations League quarter-finals against Spain. However, he will now remain in England for further assessment upon his return to Merseyside.

A statement from the Netherlands camp indicated that Gravenberch sustained the injury during the Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle United. The midfielder had to leave the pitch with 15 minutes remaining, and the setback has now ruled him out of international duty.

Key absence for both club and country

Gravenberch has been a crucial figure for Liverpool this season, flourishing under manager Arne Slot in a deeper midfield position. The Dutchman has played a central role in Liverpool’s campaign, featuring in all Premier League matches under Slot and making 41 appearances across all competitions.

His consistent performances have cemented his importance in the squad, especially after Liverpool missed out on signing Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi last summer. Given his form, his absence could be a major blow for both Liverpool and the Netherlands as they prepare for crucial matches.

For Koeman, losing Gravenberch means reshuffling his midfield options. After making his senior debut in 2021 at just 18 years old, Gravenberch struggled for regular opportunities on the international stage during his time at Bayern Munich and in his first season with Liverpool. However, he had become a key part of the Netherlands’ midfield setup this term, appearing in all six fixtures under Koeman.

Liverpool’s upcoming schedule

While Gravenberch recuperates, Liverpool will have a short break from domestic competition, as they are not involved in the FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend. Their next fixture is a highly anticipated Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield on Wednesday, April 2.

The extent of Gravenberch’s injury remains unclear, but Liverpool will hope to have him available for their crucial run of games as they continue to battle on multiple fronts. His condition will be closely monitored in the coming days as he undergoes further medical evaluation.
