Manchester City centre-back Ruben Dias has agreed to prolong his contract by two more years.
The Portuguese defender, who turned 28 this year, was previously tied to the club until 2027. His fresh agreement stretches to 2029 and also contains an option to continue for an additional season.
Dias first arrived at the Etihad in 2020 from Benfica in a transfer worth £65m. In his debut campaign, he was recognised as the Premier League’s top performer.
Trophies and influence
Over five years in Manchester, Dias has played a central role in the team’s successes. He has been part of four league-winning squads and has also lifted the Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.
Speaking about his extension, Dias expressed his joy: “I am incredibly happy today. I love Manchester – it is my home now – and I love the Manchester City fans. When I think about the trophies we have won and the way we have played our football during my time here, I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.”
Football director Hugo Viana praised him as a “leader in the dressing room and on the pitch,” underlining his importance to the squad.
Focus on other contracts
Attention at the club is now expected to turn to other key players. John Stones and Bernardo Silva are both entering the final year of their current contracts, while Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson also have fewer than 12 months remaining.
Meanwhile, Rodri, Phil Foden, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake all have two years left on their terms.
In addition, defender Rico Lewis is nearing agreement on a new five-year deal.
