Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has two losses to mourn over on Sunday after losing at home to Crystal Palace, the other being Lisandro Martinez’s injury.
The Argentina international went down in tears from a challenge that knocked his knees into a disjointed heap and had to be stretchered off the pitch after the club medics took some time to assess the damage on the pitch.
Their decision to carry the diminutive defender off the pitch worried the fans as Martinez has been one of the better performers in Amorim’s side this season. The players, unfortunately, could not hold it together after Martinez was taken off and conceded a second goal to officially slip in their chase for a top-10 finish in the 2024/25 Premier League season.
While rueing the loss to the Eagles, Amorim also noted that his team could be without the former AFC Ajax Amsterdam man for a while, describing the injury as a “serious situation.”
“I think it is a serious situation,” Amorim said afterwards. “A bad situation for us and especially for Licha. “I think we are going to see in the next days but I think it is a serious situation. It’s really hard on us, he’s not just a great player but a strong character in the dressing room. Especially in this moment, it’s hard for us.
“Now it is time for all of us to help Licha. He felt it, and, when you are a player, you know when it is serious.
“Let’s hope for better days for him. We are here, like I say, to help him in this difficult moment.”
Meanwhile, a leading social media injury expert who has accurately predicted the severity of many injuries suffered by players all across Europe has given credence to Amorim’s comments by claiming that Martinez could spend as much as nine months away from action.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the injury expert, whose handle is @PhysioScout, wrote: “Lisandro Martinez had to be stretchered off for Manchester United after suffering a knee injury.
“Based on video, there is concern for an ACL injury (+/- meniscus) due to the non-contact nature of the incident, knee collapse during pivoting, and the visible calf ripple.
“Potential Recovery Time: 9+ months
“There is some hope that it is just an MCL/meniscus injury or just a bone bruise, but it does not look for Martinez.
“Almorim added that he thinks the injury is “serious”, which is not at all promising for Man United fans.
“Let’s hope it’s only minor.”
