It did not take Newcastle United five minutes to dismantle Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United side in their clash on the 30th of December 2024, which was the last day of football action for the year. The Red Devils would end up losing the game by two goals and slipping further into a place where they are closer to relegation than they are to the top of the table or to the European competitions spots.
Amorim spoke to the media who had a lot of questions for him following another disappointment and his key comments are summarised below:
One of the worst moments in Man United’s history
“It’s really hard. It’s one of the worst moments in the history of our club,” he said. “You have to accept another loss in front of our supporters and Newcastle were better. We suffer two goals and, in this moment, it’s hard to turn around the result. It’s a very difficult moment for everyone, so we have to continue to do our job. There is no other way.”
“It was really difficult,” Amorim added. “They started the game very well and we [conceded] a goal, really nervous. Then the second goal, really early in the game. It was really hard for us. They were better than us. Even during all the game, they controlled. We were better in the second half but that was because my players tried, really tried. But they are, like I said, better than us and they won the game.”
I had to substitute Zirkzee
“That is really simple for everyone,” defended his choice. “When the game starts and finishes, it’s simple to address. The idea was different. For Josh, it was a really difficult moment for him. I felt I had to do something in that moment. It was a really hard moment for Josh and I don’t like to do that for my players. I felt he was suffering. I was thinking about the team and I’m really sorry for Josh.”
“I think it’s a possibility,” he began. “We have to be clear with our fans. We have to change something and this season will be really hard on everybody. It can make us stronger and we have to fight. I’m really concerned. If you see the league, it’s really tough and every team has the possibility to win games. We have to be honest with our supporters and, especially, our players. We will fight for our lives.”
