Mario Hermoso is on the brink of joining AS Roma after agreeing to personal terms with the Serie A club. The Spanish defender, who recently became a free agent, had been in discussions with multiple clubs, including Galatasaray, but has now decided on a move to the Italian capital. Reports from Sky Sport Italia and Fabrizio Romano, among others, confirm that the deal is nearly finalized, with Hermoso expected to arrive in Rome on Sunday.
The contract is anticipated to run until June 2027, with an important provision allowing for a possible departure in 2026 via a release clause. Hermoso, who celebrated his 29th birthday in June, brings versatility to Roma’s defense, being capable of playing both as a central defender and as a left-back.
Hermoso Leaves Atlético Madrid After Five Years
Hermoso has been a fixture at Atlético Madrid for the past five years but became a free agent on June 30 when his contract expired. His departure from the Spanish club triggered interest from several other teams, including Galatasaray, Al-Ittihad, Al-Shabab, Inter Milan, and AC Milan. However, it appears Roma have won the race for his signature.
Roma’s Transfer Activity Continues
Although the transfer window officially closed on Friday, Roma’s recruitment efforts have not ceased. The club is still in a position to sign free agents and might take advantage of this flexibility, especially with the Saudi Pro League’s transfer window remaining open until September 2. Speculation is also mounting about Chris Smalling’s potential exit, with the English center-back reportedly in advanced talks with Al-Fayha FC.
Additionally, Roma may not stop with Hermoso, as there are rumors that they are also in negotiations with German defender Mats Hummels. The Giallorossi seem intent on bolstering their defensive options even further as they prepare for the new season.
