Real Madrid will square off against Mexican side Pachuca in the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup final, scheduled to take place in Qatar on Wednesday evening. This competition has succeeded the FIFA Club World Cup and features champions from six continental tournaments, culminating in a grand finale this week.
As winners of the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid secured an automatic berth in the final. Meanwhile, Pachuca navigated a series of knockout rounds to earn their place in this much-anticipated showdown at the Lusail Stadium.
Pachuca’s road to the final
The tournament began with a first-round match in September, where Al Ain from the United Arab Emirates defeated Auckland City of New Zealand in a high-scoring 6-2 victory. The second round in late October saw Egyptian giants Al Ahly eliminate Al Ain, advancing further into the competition.
Last Wednesday, Pachuca stunned Brazilian Copa Libertadores champions Botafogo with a dominant performance, setting the stage for their semi-final clash against Al Ahly on Saturday. Following a tense goalless match that extended through extra time, the Mexican team prevailed in a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout, earning their spot in the final against Madrid.
First-ever encounter between Madrid and Pachuca
Although Real Madrid has faced other Mexican clubs in previous international competitions, this will mark their inaugural meeting with Pachuca. Both teams are also set to compete in the newly revamped FIFA Club World Cup in the United States next summer.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side will aim to cap off the year on a high note before turning their attention back to domestic football. Following Wednesday’s final, Los Blancos will return to Spain for their last La Liga match of 2024, taking on Sevilla on December 22.
The stage is set for a thrilling conclusion to this global competition, as European and North American champions collide in Qatar.
