Keylor Navas, the Costa Rican goalkeeper, aged 37, has officially announced his departure from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) via Instagram. Navas disclosed that he would be leaving the club upon the expiration of his contract in June. The decision to part ways with PSG was expected, considering his limited role within the team since the arrival of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in 2021.
Navas, who previously played for Real Madrid, has had a diminished presence on the pitch for PSG over the past three seasons. During the current season, he managed just five appearances, two of which were in the Coupe de France. Despite his reduced playing time, Navas expressed sincere appreciation for the PSG supporters, acknowledging their unwavering support during his tenure at the club.
PSG’s Goalkeeping Dynamics and Navas’ Gratitude
Last summer, PSG made preparations for Navas’ anticipated departure by securing the services of Barcelona B goalkeeper Arnau Tenas. The club’s future plans in the goalkeeping department may depend on the performances of Tenas and the recovery progress of Sergio Rico. Rico, the former Sevilla FC goalkeeper, is currently undergoing rehabilitation following a serious horse-riding incident last year.
With Navas bidding farewell to PSG, the club finds itself at a crossroads regarding its goalkeeping options. The potential departure of Navas could prompt PSG to explore options in the transfer market to reinforce their goalkeeping lineup. However, PSG’s decision-making process may be influenced by the emergence of Tenas as a viable option and the ongoing recovery journey of Sergio Rico.
In his heartfelt farewell message, Navas expressed profound gratitude to the PSG fans for their continuous support and affection. He reminisced about the memorable moments spent at the Parc des Princes, describing them as “marvelous.” Navas conveyed his immense pride in representing the club and emphasized that while he still harbors ambitions, he couldn’t let the opportunity pass without bidding farewell to his cherished “home” at PSG.
