Paris Saint-Germain has dismissed speculation surrounding a recent conversation between club executives and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender was spotted speaking with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos in the tunnel at Anfield following last week’s Champions League last-16 second leg.
Given the natural curiosity that surrounds such meetings, the sight of Van Dijk engaging with PSG’s leadership quickly fueled rumors, especially as his Liverpool contract is running down with no renewal currently in place. With the 32-year-old already eligible to discuss terms with foreign clubs, speculation intensified.
However, PSG’s media director Pascal Ferry has played down the significance of the interaction, stating that it was merely a casual conversation and not linked to any potential transfer.
Club denies interest in signing Liverpool captain
Ferry addressed the situation directly, stating that there was nothing unusual about the discussion. “I don’t understand why this video has caused such a stir on social media. The exchange between Van Dijk, our president, and the sporting director was completely natural and unplanned,” he told 365 Scores.
He further emphasized that there were no talks regarding a possible move for the Dutch international. “Our president did not negotiate any transfer, and all the speculation surrounding this is untrue. It was a friendly discussion, and Van Dijk is held in the highest regard by the club.”
Despite these assurances, Van Dijk’s future remains uncertain. The defender has admitted he has yet to decide on his next steps, and his looming free agency has made him an attractive prospect for top European clubs.
Real Madrid monitoring defensive options as Liverpool plans for the future
PSG is not the only club linked with Van Dijk. Real Madrid, dealing with a shortage of central defenders this season, is also reportedly exploring multiple options. Alongside Van Dijk, the Spanish giants are keeping tabs on RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba and Arsenal’s William Saliba, each at different stages of their careers.
Meanwhile, Liverpool is considering life after their long-serving captain. Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck has emerged as a potential target, while Bournemouth’s rising talent Dean Huijsen continues to be mentioned in connection with the club. With Van Dijk turning 34 this summer, Liverpool may look to reshape their defensive line in the near future.
