PSG appoint Christophe Galtier as new manager

PSG have announced Christophe Galtier as their new manager after parting ways with Mauricio Pochettino. Despite winning the Ligue 1 in the just concluded season, it was evident that PSG were going to end their relationship with the Argentine manager, especially after the club’s famous capitulation in the Champions League against Real Madrid.

Taking over the new challenge is Christophe Galtier, with the former Lille manager joining PSG on a two-year-contract. Known for his tactical prowess and player management skills, the 55-year-old also has reputable awards to his name, such as the best Ligue 1 manager award on three occasions (2013, 2019 and 2021).

His best achievement perhaps came in the 2020/21 campaign, where he led Lille to a Ligue 1 title, against all odds. A much bigger challenge now awaits, where he would be expected to deliver, especially in the Champions League.

Galtier aware of high expectations at PSG

PSG are never afraid to show managers the sack letter, especially when it comes to the ‘little matter’ of the Champions League. Several top class managers have come and go, simply for their failure to deliver at continenal level.

Speaking after his confirmation, Galtier admitted he was aware of the task lying ahead and expressed his eagerness to get to work.

He said: “I am delighted to join Paris Saint-Germain, I would like to thank the chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Luis Campos and the club for their confidence in me. I am fully aware of the responsibilities involved to coach this extraordinary team, which is one of the most competitive and spectacular squads in Europe. “

“I am delighted to work with all of these talented players as well as the top-level staff here at the club. We acknowledge everything that Paris Saint-Germain represents in French and international football. My focus is on ambition, hard work and making the most of the team’s potential. I am delighted to become head coach of this team and to be on the bench at the magnificent Parc des Princes, a stadium that embodies a passion for football.”

Galtier wants to keep Neymar at the club

Over recent weeks, reports have claimed that Neymar could be on his way out of the club after being deemed surplus to requirements. Infact, the Brazilian has strongly been linked with a move to Chelsea but in contrast, the new PSG boss has now claimed he wants to work with the 30-year-old.

Speaking on Neymar’s future, Galtier said: “He is a world-class player. One of the best on the planet.”

“Which coach would not want to have him in their team? I have an idea of exactly what I expect from him. I hope that he stays with us.
