Phil Foden admits England players share blame for Euro 2024 disappointments

England forward Phil Foden has acknowledged that the players must take some responsibility for the team’s lackluster performances during Euro 2024 this summer. The Three Lions managed only one victory in their three group matches and were on the brink of being knocked out in the last 16 by Slovakia. A remarkable overhead kick from Jude Bellingham in the dying moments of the game pushed the match into extra-time, securing their passage.

Players must step up, says Foden

Foden defended manager Gareth Southgate amid criticism from fans and stressed that the players also need to share the blame for the underwhelming results. “The players have got to take some of the blame,” Foden stated. “There needs to be leadership on the pitch to find out why things aren’t working.”

He emphasized that while Southgate provides the tactical setup and instructions, it is ultimately up to the players to adapt and respond during the match. “There is only so much the manager can do,” Foden continued. “If the system isn’t working, players need to adjust their play, perhaps by changing the formation or addressing issues as they arise during the game.”

Improving communication and adaptability

Foden suggested that better communication on the field could improve England’s performance. He noted that in the game against Denmark, there was a lack of collective problem-solving. “We didn’t really do that,” he said, referring to the need for players to regroup and address issues when under pressure.

Foden also expressed sympathy for Southgate, recognizing that the manager has not been at fault for the team’s shortcomings. “I feel sorry for Gareth,” he said. “He has been instructing us to press high and maintain our shape, but sometimes it has to come from us as players.”

Looking ahead: quarter-final clash

As England prepares for their quarter-final match against Switzerland, Foden hopes for a significant improvement. He believes that by addressing the issues discussed and enhancing their pressing game, the team can present a stronger performance. “We have spoken about it more,” Foden added. “If similar situations occur, we need to come together, find solutions, and adapt our approach accordingly.”
