Following the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s (CAS) decision to reduce his doping ban from four years to 18 months, Paul Pogba is making headlines as he prepares to return to football. The 31-year-old midfielder, who will be eligible to play again in March 2025, has spoken extensively to several media outlets about his time away, his potential future, and his ambitions to make a comeback.
Reflecting on a difficult period
In an interview with RMC Sport, Pogba revealed the emotional toll of his suspension, even admitting he considered walking away from the game. “At times, I thought about retirement. It was a period filled with uncertainty, where I didn’t know what the future held. You’re left waiting, unsure when it will all end,” he shared. This difficult phase left Pogba questioning his future in football.
Speaking with L’Équipe, the French international discussed the personal growth he experienced during his time away. “During the suspension, I feel like I aged 10 years. It gave me a new perspective on life. Things you took for granted start to change. The calls and messages stop coming.” Pogba credited his faith for keeping him strong, saying, “Believing in something bigger than yourself is what kept me going during the hardest moments.”
Determined to return stronger
In his interview with ESPN, Pogba expressed his hunger and determination to return as a better player. “It’s going to be a new Pogba,” he declared. “I feel like a kid again, eager to prove myself. The frustration I feel is driving me. I’m determined to come back not just at my previous level, but even stronger.”
While Pogba is filled with ambition for his return, his future at the club level remains uncertain. He is still under contract with Juventus until 2026, but there have been reports of a potential termination of his deal. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he made it clear that he wishes to stay in Turin, even if it means reducing his salary. “I’m a Juventus player, and that’s where my focus is right now. I’m willing to take a pay cut if that’s what it takes to stay.”
Addressing speculation about his future
Despite rumors linking him to other clubs, Pogba firmly ruled out a move to AC Milan and laughed off suggestions of joining Olympique de Marseille, which were fueled by former teammate Patrice Evra. “I’ve always been linked with clubs like PSG and Real Madrid, but I remain professional and loyal to Juventus,” he clarified. He also mentioned that he has yet to speak with new Juventus manager Thiago Motta, hinting that legal issues have prevented the conversation but expressed his hope to do so soon.
Eyeing a national team comeback
Pogba has also set his sights on a return to the French national team. He acknowledged the support he received from key figures during his suspension, including French coach Didier Deschamps, Zlatan Ibrahimović, and Didier Drogba. “Deschamps was one of those who stood by me. Others, like Drogba and Ronaldo, also gave me advice and encouragement,” he said.
His goal is to once again represent France, but he knows it won’t be easy. “Returning to Les Bleus is an objective. You have to earn your spot, and I’m ready to work hard for it,” Pogba concluded.
