Paqueta Calls for FA Action on Leaked Betting Allegations

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta has called on the Football Association (FA) to launch an investigation into what he describes as “misleading” information leaked about his ongoing betting case. Paqueta was charged by the FA in May, accused of deliberately getting booked in matches for the purpose of manipulating the betting market.

Paqueta, 27, firmly denies all four charges and expressed concern that media coverage, both in England and Brazil, is negatively impacting his chances of a fair disciplinary process. In a statement on social media platform X, Paqueta expressed frustration over “inaccurate” reporting. He also questioned how such information, which he claims is false, is reaching the press.

Impact of Leaks on Case Confidentiality

The Brazilian international raised concerns that someone with inside knowledge of the case may be behind the leaks. Paqueta emphasized the seriousness of the situation for both him and his family, noting that the FA’s proceedings are supposed to remain confidential. The midfielder argued that the ongoing publication of incorrect information jeopardizes his opportunity to receive an unbiased hearing.

Paqueta’s case revolves around alleged misconduct during Premier League matches against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United, and Bournemouth between November 2022 and August 2023. Despite the charges, Paqueta has continued to play for West Ham but could face a lengthy suspension if found guilty.

Legal Action and FA Investigation Request

Paqueta revealed that his legal team has taken action, formally requesting the FA to investigate how details of his case have been leaked to the media. He pointed out that the leaks appear intended to undermine his position, as they paint an inaccurate picture of the allegations. The midfielder joined West Ham from Lyon in August 2022 in a deal worth £36.5 million and has been an active contributor this season, scoring two goals in seven Premier League appearances.
