New contract for Mason Mount following confirmation of Chelsea takeover

A report from the Daily Mail states that Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount will receive a bump in his pay after the takeover of the club was officially announced on Tuesday.

Chelsea had been unable to enter into contract negotiations with a number of players due to the sanctions placed on the club by the government of the United Kingdom.

As a result, they are set to lose players who they value this summer. However, they can count on academy star Mason Mount, who is still tied by contract to the club until 2024 and is willing to extend his stay.

Chelsea’s takeover has been sanctioned by the Premier League but is still subject to vetoing from the UK government, which reports claim will be completed by May 31. The club will then proceed to double his current £80,000-per-week pay in the new contract being prepared for him.

The 23-year-old got his big break under Frank Lampard and was one of the bright spots in the former Chelsea midfielder’s time in the Blues’ dugout. He has been Chelsea’s player of the season for the past two seasons and also finished as the club’s top scorer (11 goals) and assist provider (10 assists) in the Premier League this season.

His current £80,000-a-week is one of the lowest in the club despite the value he brings and Thomas Tuchel wants that changed. The German manager also wants to make Mount the centre of his sporting project next season.

Mount’s new contract will see him climb up to £160,000-a-week and place him in the top five of Chelsea earners alongside Romelu Lukaku, Benjamin Chilwell, N’Golo Kante and Timo Werner.

Tuchel handed £200 million war chest for transfers

Meanwhile, Tuchel has been given £200 million by the club’s new owners to shop in the transfer window for players to rebuild the team.

They have identified eight defenders to be approached including Sevilla’s Jules Kounde (who they almost signed in the summer of 2021), Atlético de Madrid’s Jose Maria Gimenez, Red Bull Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol and Villarreal’s Pau Torres are at the top of their list.

In attack, Manchester City frontman Raheem Sterling has been added to their list, as the 27-year-old’s future is uncertain following the arrivals of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and Julian Alvarez from River Plate.
