Mohamed Salah agrees to fresh two-year contract with Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has committed to Liverpool for two more years, ending months of uncertainty surrounding his future. The Egyptian forward’s previous agreement was set to expire this summer, leading to intense speculation over whether he would remain at Anfield. Interest from Saudi Arabia, along with Salah’s own remarks earlier in the season, had fueled the belief he might depart.

Instead, the 32-year-old has chosen to stay and build on an already impressive record of 243 goals and 109 assists across 393 matches for the Reds. “We’ve got a strong squad now,” Salah said. “I’ve had a great time here, and I think we can still win more and keep enjoying the game.”

The extension could see Salah reach a decade with the club, having arrived from Roma in 2017. During his time on Merseyside, he has lifted the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Ongoing negotiations and contract twists

The process leading up to the new deal was marked by uncertainty. In September, following a victory over Manchester United, Salah hinted it might be his final season with Liverpool due to a lack of communication from the club. He echoed that frustration in November, expressing disappointment over not receiving a fresh offer and believing his departure was more likely than staying.

Further remarks in January indicated a wide gap remained between the two sides. Despite this, Liverpool’s leadership insisted discussions were moving forward in a positive direction.

The club had previously turned down a substantial £150 million proposal from Al-Ittihad in 2023. Comments from Saudi Arabia’s sports minister also highlighted strong interest in securing the forward’s services. Liverpool manager Arne Slot, however, publicly stated he hoped Salah would remain and praised his ability to make thoughtful decisions.

Contract details and teammates’ situations

While specific terms of the renewed agreement have not been disclosed, Salah’s previous earnings exceeded £350,000 per week, making him the highest-paid player in Liverpool history. The latest deal is understood not to involve a salary reduction.

Salah is one of several senior players whose contracts were set to run out soon. Virgil van Dijk has acknowledged progress in his own talks with the club, while speculation continues around Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

With 32 goals so far in the current season – 27 of those in the Premier League – Salah has already made it his second-best league campaign for the Reds. Liverpool are currently 11 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, with seven fixtures left as they aim for a 20th domestic title.
