Paris Saint-Germain are left nursing a big wound after Kylian Mbappe’s message to them about the upcoming 2022/23 season being his last one.
The 24-year-old signed a contract extension in 2022 after a protracted transfer saga involving every big club in Europe, with Real Madrid at the forefront. The French Prince signed for two years with an option to extend for an extra year.
It was the biggest contract in football history until the Saudis struck with their deals for Cristiano Ronaldo and most recently, Karim Benzema.
Mbappe is now left jaded at the way things have gone at PSG and has told the club that he will not be activating the option to remain at the club beyond 2024, meaning he will be leaving for free that summer.
The French Ligue 1 champions are reportedly furious at the forward’s decision and are cooking up ways to get a transfer fee for him this summer. This is because he is one of the world’s most valuable footballers and if he leaves for free, they will be losing out on revenue.
Mbappe, meanwhile, is going about his life, working with the French national football team in their June internationals but reports have claimed that his agents are talking to a number of Premier League clubs to help PSG find a solution this summer.
Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea were the clubs who showed the most interest in his signature during the first transfer saga. The report does not state which clubs he is in contact with at this time but it can be implied that he is talking to these clubs.
They will have to contend with Real Madrid, however, who have reportedly re-entered the race to sign Mbappe after the Frenchman broke their hearts in the summer of 2022.
The Spanish giants recently completed the signing of Jude Bellingham for a fee that will rise to £115 million, making him the second most expensive player they have signed. It was believed that they do not have another £100 million to spend on a new signing but Mbappe is an opportunity they are not willing to let go of.
Not even the fact that PSG will reportedly demand north of £200 million from them and £150 million from others is going to deter them.
Meanwhile, president of France Emmanuel Macron, who was pivotal in getting Mbappe to renew his contract last year, has been approached again concerning the new development.
He has promised to look into the matter again to keep the country’s most prized sporting asset within its borders, the way Brazil did with Pelé all those years ago.
