Kylian Mbappé has been discharged from hospital following a bout of gastroenteritis, Real Madrid confirmed in an official statement. The French forward had been ruled out of Madrid’s FIFA Club World Cup opener against Al Hilal after falling ill earlier in the week.
Mbappé did not take part in any of the pre-match training sessions and was absent from the 1–1 draw, in which Gonzalo García replaced him in the starting lineup and netted Madrid’s only goal. His condition was initially thought to be a fever, but further medical checks revealed a case of gastroenteritis that required hospital care.
A brief statement from the club read: “Our player Kylian Mbappé was discharged from the hospital this afternoon and has returned to the Real Madrid training camp. Mbappé will continue receiving specific medical treatment and will gradually return to team activity.”
Progress after hospital stay
Spanish outlet MARCA reported that Mbappé began feeling ill on Monday and remained isolated in his hotel room in the following days. Club officials kept him separated from teammates to limit any risk of spreading the infection throughout the squad.
Despite resting, his condition did not improve, prompting the decision to admit him to hospital for further observation and care. Real Madrid’s medical team monitored his recovery closely during his stay.
Speaking after the game against Al Hilal, head coach Xabi Alonso acknowledged the seriousness of the illness: “He’s been in a bad way the last two days,” Alonso said. “He’s been dealing with a serious viral infection.”
Uncertainty over return date
With Real Madrid set to face Pachuca on Sunday, Mbappé remains highly unlikely to feature in that match. His full recovery and return to training are being handled cautiously by medical staff.
The hope remains that the 26-year-old could return to the pitch for Madrid’s final group fixture against Red Bull Salzburg on June 27. Until then, Gonzalo García is expected to lead the attack once again, as the squad lacks other natural centre-forwards.
