Mbappe chooses Real Madrid over PSG’s lucrative offer

Kylian Mbappe opted to forgo an extraordinary financial package at Paris Saint-Germain in favor of a move to Real Madrid, according to reports from France. The French star’s decision to join the Spanish giants came despite the potential to earn a staggering €250 million gross in just one season had he remained in Paris.

A long-awaited transfer to Spain

After years of speculation, Mbappe finally made the switch to Real Madrid last summer, signing a long-term deal with the club that has historically dominated European football. The transfer brought closure to a saga that spanned more than three years and saw multiple twists and turns regarding his future.

Since his arrival in the Spanish capital, the World Cup winner has quickly established himself as a key figure in the squad, forming an electrifying attacking trio with Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior. His presence is expected to be central to Madrid’s success for years to come.

Financial sacrifice for sporting glory

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Mbappe currently receives an annual salary of €32 million in Madrid, making him the highest earner in La Liga and surpassing his new teammates. Despite this lucrative contract, he turned down a significantly larger sum to extend his stay in Paris.

Had he chosen to continue with PSG, the French forward would have pocketed €70 million in base salary alongside an additional €180 million in bonuses, add-ons, and image-related earnings within a single season. His total earnings at the French club could have reached €250 million pre-tax in just 12 months.

Negotiating image rights and early success

One of the key factors in the negotiations with Real Madrid was image rights. Traditionally, the club retains 50% of a player’s image rights revenue, but Mbappe’s representatives, led by his mother and agent Fayza Lamari, managed to secure an 80-20 split in his favor. While discussions were described as “tense and tough,” Real Madrid ultimately agreed to the terms, recognizing the immense commercial value he brings.

On the pitch, the French captain has delivered an exceptional first season. With 31 goals across all competitions, including 20 in 26 La Liga appearances, he has significantly contributed to Madrid’s push for domestic and European success. His performances have helped position the club as strong contenders for their 37th league title and another Champions League triumph, which would extend their record to 16 victories.
