Mathys Tel Expected to Return to Bayern After Tottenham Loan

French forward Mathys Tel is expected to return to Bayern Munich once his loan spell with Tottenham Hotspur ends. Tel struggled for game time in the first half of the season, making only two appearances for Bayern before being loaned to the Premier League club in January. The temporary deal, sanctioned by Vincent Kompany, included an option for Spurs to sign him permanently for £50 million.

Tel made an immediate impact in England, scoring in stoppage time against Aston Villa in an FA Cup defeat on February 9. However, his league appearances have been limited, featuring only four times and completing a full 90 minutes just once. While his performances have shown gradual improvement, Kicker reports that Bayern may need to recall him sooner than planned.

Bayern’s Squad Concerns and Possible Early Recall

Bayern Munich is preparing for a packed schedule in June as they head to Orlando for the FIFA Club World Cup. The German champions are expected to be without several key players due to international commitments, with Germany, France, and Portugal all involved in the Nations League at the same time. As a result, Bayern may look to recall loaned players to bolster their squad.

The club is already dealing with a growing injury list, which was further extended after Hiroki Ito sustained a knock in a 3-2 win over St Pauli. Other notable absentees include Kingsley Coman, Alphonso Davies, and Aleksandar Pavlovic. FIFA’s introduction of an additional transfer window from June 1 to June 10 could provide Bayern with an opportunity to bring Tel back before the original June 30 loan expiry date.

Tel’s Uncertain Future at Tottenham

Tel has expressed a desire to remain at Tottenham, stating that his decision to join the club was based on the opportunities for growth and the trust shown by chairman Daniel Levy and manager Ange Postecoglou. However, it remains unclear if Spurs will trigger the purchase clause.

Postecoglou has acknowledged Tel’s potential but admitted that circumstances have made it difficult for the young forward to make a significant impact. The manager highlighted the challenges of adapting to a new league and building match fitness after limited playing time in Germany. Despite this, he praised Tel’s mentality and resilience, suggesting that his performances could still improve.

As his future remains undecided, Tel will shift his focus back to domestic action, with Tottenham set to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.
