Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha has received a two-game suspension and an £80,000 fine from the Football Association. The disciplinary action follows an incident involving Ipswich Town security staff earlier this month.
The Brazilian striker was charged with misconduct after an altercation at the conclusion of Wolves’ 2-1 loss to Ipswich at Molineux. During the dispute, Cunha reportedly elbowed a member of the opposing staff and forcibly removed his glasses.
As a result of the ban, Cunha will miss Wolves’ upcoming Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest and their FA Cup third-round match against Bristol City.
Incident after Ipswich defeat
The confrontation occurred shortly after Wolves suffered a late defeat, with Jack Taylor scoring a dramatic injury-time winner for Ipswich. The loss had significant consequences, leading to the dismissal of Wolves’ manager Gary O’Neil and his coaching staff. They were subsequently replaced by Vitor Pereira and his team.
The post-match tension escalated further when Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri received a second yellow card in the tunnel. Cunha’s actions during the altercation were deemed improper by the FA, leading to his punishment.
Cunha’s recent form amid team struggles
Despite the controversy, Cunha has demonstrated strong performances on the pitch. The 25-year-old has been instrumental in recent matches, scoring in victories over Leicester City and Manchester United, and contributing to a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Tottenham.
Cunha has tallied an impressive 10 goals in 19 Premier League appearances this season. However, Wolves find themselves in a precarious position, sitting 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone as they prepare to face Nottingham Forest at home.
