Marseille’s Summer Revamp Under De Zerbi

Roberto de Zerbi’s appointment as the new head coach of Olympique de Marseille signals a significant transformation for the club. The Southern French team is undergoing a major squad revamp this summer, with several signings already confirmed. According to RMC Sport, players like Jordan Amavi and Ulisses Garcia are deemed surplus to requirements by the Italian manager and are expected to depart.

Active Transfer Window

Marseille has been among the most proactive Ligue 1 clubs during this transfer period. The arrivals of Lilian Brassier, Ismaël Koné, and Mason Greenwood highlight their aggressive approach in strengthening the squad. Despite these additions, De Zerbi is keen on reshaping the team further by offloading players who do not fit into his plans. Key players such as Pau Lopez, Chancel Mbemba, and Samuel Gigot have been excluded from first-team training, indicating a comprehensive defensive restructuring.

The exclusion of these regular starters from training sessions underscores De Zerbi’s intent to overhaul the defense. As part of the new strategy, the club is also focusing on integrating the new signings and ensuring they adapt quickly to the team’s dynamics.

Players on the Way Out

Jordan Veretout has recently been sidelined, joining a growing list of players potentially facing an exit. The latest to be excluded from the squad are Jordan Amavi and Ulisses Garcia. Amavi, who spent last season on loan at Stade Brestois, made only two appearances due to a serious injury. With his contract expiring next summer, Marseille aims to sell the former Aston Villa defender. Similarly, Garcia, who joined from Young Boys Berne last winter, is also training with the reserve team and may be forced to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Amavi’s limited game time last season due to his injury has made him a less attractive option for De Zerbi’s plans. The club is keen to capitalize on any potential transfer fee before his contract runs out. Garcia, despite his relatively recent arrival, has not managed to secure a place in the first team and is now looking at the possibility of finding a new club where he can get more regular playing time.
