Manchester United’s woes have struck a nerve in Paul Scholes, who once captained the club to many titles and fought in many epic battles against global rivals.
The player-turned-football administrator-turned-broadcaster is very unhappy with how the club’s current manager, Erik ten Hag, has handled the situation at Manchester United, a sentiment which he shares with the club’s millions of fans.
With his big platform, he has now expressed the anger in the hearts of many who hope for Manchester United’s glory days to return by telling off ten Hag in a rant for the ages.
Speaking on Optus Sports after the humiliating home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Scholes said: “Players looked dead today, they looked flat, they looked like they don’t know what to do and there is no enthusiasm for the game of football.”
“You don’t know how they are going to play, how they’re going to approach games, are they going to play on the counter-attack, try and sit deep, try and have all possession? We have no idea.”
“Of course we should [know by know]. They look an uncoached football team.”
“I think whatever happens, happens and he [Ten Hag] just takes it. It’s not [acceptable] we are two-and-a-bit years in now and from the first week Postecoglou went in we probably knew what Tottenham were going to do and are doing it to this day.”
“We’re two-and-a-bit years down the road and it’s an uncoached team and that can only come from the training pitch.”
“They don’t know what they want. Some of the positions that people take up on the pitch it’s just madness at times. Stop hearing excuses, get on that training pitch and find a way of playing.”
“Just give us something. He [Ten Hag] really praised Postecoglou for the way they play, why don’t you try something like that?”
Jamie Redknapp, on the other hand, feels sorry for the Dutchman, around whom rumours of a sack are encircling.
“It gets to a point where you almost feel sorry for the manager as well. He looks completely out of his depth, he looks like he’s struggling to motivate his team,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.”
“If you’re under pressure as a manager, this is where you want to come because you get all your confidence back. It was so easy for Tottenham. They looked comfortable, calm, under no duress.”
“Man Utd and Ten Hag are going backwards. You can’t complain anymore, he’s got his back four in place, he’s got all the players at his disposal – there’s no excuses. They are rock bottom right now.”
