Pep Guardiola has expressed his relief that the long-awaited hearing regarding Manchester City’s alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations is finally set to commence. Following an investigation that lasted four years, the reigning champions were charged and referred to an independent commission in February 2023. The charges claim that City violated financial rules between 2009 and 2018.
City have consistently rejected these allegations, insisting that they are backed by “a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” that supports their innocence. Speaking ahead of the hearing, Guardiola emphasized his hope for a quick resolution, stating, “It starts soon and hopefully finishes soon… I’m happy it’s starting on Monday.”
Charges and Investigation Timeline
The case against Manchester City involves 115 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations. The Premier League also accused the club of failing to cooperate fully with the investigation. The charges are believed to stem from reports originally published by the German outlet Der Spiegel, which used information obtained from what City called “illegal hacking” and “out of context” emails.
If found guilty of the most serious offenses, City could face severe consequences, ranging from a points deduction to relegation or even expulsion from the Premier League. Despite the gravity of the charges, Guardiola stood firm, reiterating the principle of “innocent until proven guilty.”
Outcome Expected in 2025
Dubbed by some as the “trial of the century” in the world of sport, the hearing is expected to last for about 10 weeks, with a verdict likely to be reached by early 2025. Guardiola acknowledged that the public and media have been anticipating the outcome for years, and while rumors and speculation are bound to continue, he remains focused on the independent panel’s decision.
Since their takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, Manchester City has enjoyed significant success, including eight Premier League titles and multiple domestic cups, as well as winning the UEFA Champions League.
