Manchester City have reached an agreement to sign 18-year-old Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg for a reported fee of £12.5 million. The Norwegian midfielder is widely seen as one of the most promising young players in his country, and his move marks another strategic addition to City’s long-term squad planning.
Nypan, who has already featured for Norway’s national teams up to the under-21 level, is expected to be sent out on a loan spell for the 2025–26 season, giving him the opportunity to gain more experience before potentially integrating into City’s first team.
City’s continued investment in young talent
This potential arrival follows a busy transfer window for Manchester City, who recently brought in left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, creative winger Rayan Cherki, central midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, and goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli—all of whom joined earlier in June.
The club’s interest in Nypan reflects a broader strategy of building for the future, with the teenager’s reputation already catching the attention of many across Europe. His performances in Norway’s top flight have drawn praise for their maturity and consistency despite his age.
A rising star in Norwegian football
Norwegian football journalist Andreas Korssund emphasized Nypan’s stature within his homeland, describing him as one of the standout talents in the Eliteserien. According to Korssund, while it’s not unexpected that the young midfielder is making a move abroad, the fact that he is joining a club of Manchester City’s calibre at this stage of his career is noteworthy.
Korssund pointed out that other notable Norwegian players—like Erling Haaland and Antonio Nusa—chose developmental routes through clubs such as Red Bull Salzburg and Club Brugge, where regular playing time was more readily available. In contrast, Nypan’s direct jump to the Premier League champions underlines both his ability and City’s confidence in his potential.
