James Maddison has apologised to Leicester City fans following his mistake which cost his side much needed three points in their fight to avoid relegation.
Leicester City lost 1 – 0 at the King Power Stadium against visitors and fellow relegation strugglers Bournemouth. Maddison attempted a back pass which was cut out by the Cherries, leading to Philip Billing, Bournemouth’s standout player for the season, scoring the only goal of the game in the first half of the fixture.
It ultimately confined the Foxes to 19th place on the log and propelled the Cherries to 16th, two places and five points away from the relegation zone.
Maddison was visibly unhappy after his error and for most of the game. At the blast of the final whistle, he appeared even more distraught at the realisation that his error could be the difference between the Foxes remaining in the league next season and relegation.
The former Coventry City midfielder took to social media to apologise for his error after the game. He said: “It was a really tough one to take. I am very low at the moment.
“We knew it was a big game and didn’t try and dress it up as anything else. We’ve worked really hard. I made a sloppy mistake and it cost us. I am very low.
“I’m always hungry to do well for the team. I tried to erase it and not do too much to make up for it.
“I am very low and sad in defeat because my mistake sort of cost the team. We have to dust ourselves down and go again.
“I’ll be sad tonight and probably tomorrow but we’ll get going again on Monday. It is so important we stay positive.
“We’ll try and rally the troops. I apologise to the fans for today, I thought they were brilliant.
“It is not brilliant for us in terms of results and performances aren’t quite there at the moment but it is important the fans stick with us.
“There is still a long way to go. It is tight down there. I would have preferred to win today. It wasn’t a make-or-break. There are still plenty of points to play for.”
Jesse Marsch, formerly of Leeds United, is set to lead them to play for those points in the coming weeks, according to reports.
The Foxes are set to appoint the American manager to handle the club until the end of the season at least, while a contract extension will be discussed following set criteria.
