Liverpool have declined an offer from Newcastle United that involved a swap deal including Anthony Gordon and Jarell Quansah. Despite Liverpool’s admiration for the 23-year-old forward, they did not find the deal suitable. Gordon joined Newcastle for £45 million in January 2023 and is currently part of the England squad at Euro 2024. He made his sole appearance as a late substitute in Tuesday’s goalless match against Slovenia. Gordon, who is also on Paris St-Germain’s radar, netted 11 league goals for Newcastle last season and was named the club’s Player of the Season for 2023-24.
Liverpool’s Forward Options and Quansah’s Importance
Liverpool did not propose any deal and are not interested in letting go of 21-year-old Quansah. The young centre-back became a regular in Liverpool’s first team last season and was in the preliminary England squad for Euro 2024, although he did not make the final 26-man roster. Liverpool’s attacking lineup is already robust, featuring Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, and Diogo Jota. Given their strong forward options, Liverpool did not feel the need to bring in Gordon.
Quansah’s development and importance to Liverpool’s defensive lineup make him a key player they are unwilling to lose. His performance last season has solidified his place in the squad, making the proposed swap deal even less appealing to Liverpool.
Newcastle’s Approach and Liverpool’s Response
Newcastle United’s proposal indicates their interest in strengthening their defensive options by bringing in Quansah. However, Liverpool’s firm stance on retaining their young talent reflects their strategic priorities. By rejecting the deal, Liverpool demonstrates their commitment to nurturing their own players and maintaining a balanced squad.
Newcastle United has been approached for comments by BBC Sport regarding Liverpool’s decision. As the transfer window progresses, it remains to be seen if Newcastle will pursue other options or modify their proposal to better align with Liverpool’s interests.
