Lionel Messi has addressed his future in his latest media outing in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo’s emotional outing a few days ago.
Messi, who is currently with Argentina to prepare for his fifth World Cup appearance which is also slated to be his last, took some time to speak to the media about his career so far and what lies ahead.
“I don’t think I will play for much longer,” he told former teammates Ezequiel Lavezzi, who spoke to him on behalf of CONMEBOL media. “I love football. Surely, I will work on something related to it. I have done it all my life.”
This comes as no surprise to those who have followed his career in the last few seasons closely. However, it is a harsh reality that many are not ready to face, especially Paris Saint-Germain, who are currently enjoying Messi at his best after he took his time to adapt to the club’s and to Ligue 1’s style of play in the first year of his contract.
He will be a free agent at the end of the season but PSG are reported to be speaking with his father, who also works as his agent, Jorge Messi, on a two-year extension.
The 35-year-old is enjoying an outstanding season with Pmthe French champions. His seven goals and 10 assists in 13 league games added to his four goals and four assists in the UEFA Champions League have put him back in the spotlight, front and centre, where he belongs.
PSG currently sits on top of the Ligue 1 table and has advanced to the Round of 16 in Champions League. Messi is focused on helping them achieve the elusive title but more importantly, he will be looking forward to winning the World Cup with Argetina.
He came close in 2014, where his golden ball winning performance helped them to the final against Germany, who narrowly edged them out 1 – 0 in a very tight contest in Brazil.
Argentina, however, are currently the most in form team in the international scene. They have gone 36 games unbeaten in all competition, including the 2020 Copa America, which they also won.
Barcelona are also rumoured to be in the running to have him return to the Spotify Camp Nou.
However, it is less than likely that he puts on the Barcelona shirt in official competitions again after an expose on how he left the club from his Guillem Balague-written biography made media rounds.
