Levi Colwill snubs Premier League rivals to sign new deal at Chelsea

Chelsea have announced that Levi Colwill has put pen to paper on a new six-year contract, with an option to increase for a further year, taking the deal to a total of seven years.

Having joined Chelsea at the age of age, the Cobham academy graduate has already grown a reputation as one of the top young defenders in world football. He played a starring role this summer as England claimed the England win the European Under-21 Championship.

Colwill has shown his worth and has featured throughout pre-season under head coach Mauricio Pochettino. The likes of Brighton and Liverpool were serioudly interested in signing the player, but the 20-year-old is focused on making his name at Stamford Bridge.

Colwill delighted to sign new Chelsea deal

“It’s always been an easy decision,” said Colwill.

“As I’ve grown up, all I’ve known is Chelsea. I’ve spoken with the manager and he’s given me reassurance, that trust I needed. He’s spoken with me not just as a player but a person. It’s made a big difference.”

“I remember being in the old dome [at Cobham]. Coming in as a trialist, I was really nervous at the time. I went into training, really enjoying it, and then I had a six-week trial. On my ninth birthday, that’s when I got offered the contract, and I signed it there and then.”

“I never thought I could become what I have today, through all the hard work. There is no better feeling. So it has always been an easy decision. I have grown up, and all I have known is Chelsea,” he beamed.

“I want to bring to the team my willingness and dedication, I hate losing as a player. Every day, of course being a footballer is the best job in the world, but you also have to work hard. That is how you become the best and that is how you improve.”

Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said: ‘Levi is an outstanding player who has risen to every challenge in his career so far. We are thrilled he will remain at Chelsea for years to come.

“His journey from academy to first team is testament to his talent, dedication, and determination. Everyone at the club is now looking forward to watching him thrive at Stamford Bridge in the seasons ahead.”

Colwill will now be looking to make the starting lineup when Chelsea take on Liverpool in their opening game of the 2023/24 Premier League season.
