Leicester City confirm exits of seven players as relegation rebuild begins

Leicester City are wasting no time with the rebuilding of their squad to meet their financial obligations for the 2023/24 EFL Championship season as they announce the exits of seven first team players.

The said players are all out of a contract in June and the Foxes have opted against renewing any of them as their wage requirements will affect their finances even further.

Relegation forces teams to cut costs as no money is awarded to relegated teams, leading to them running at a loss after a season.

The Foxes will count themselves lucky to have a number of their first team players who are out of a contract in June as it will mean they can go for less expensive options who are good enough to help them regain promotion back to the Premier League in the 2024/25 season.

The players who will be leaving the club are Daniel Amartey, Nampalys Mendy, Ryan Bertrand, Tete, Ayoze Perez who spent last season on loan at Spanish LaLiga side Real Betis, Çağlar Söyüncü who has agreed a move to Spanish side Atlético de Madrid and will join them in the coming weeks, and Youri Tielemans who has already shared his farewell message to the Foxes’ fans.

Amartey is one of the remaining members of the team that won the Premier League in the 2015/16 season and will now exit the club after seven seasons. His centre back partner, Söyüncü, will be leaving after more than 100 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions.

Fellow centre back and club captain Jonny Evans could also join the seven of them out of the King Power Stadium. His contract is also set to expire this month but the Foxes are in talks with him over a possible extension.

A number of players who still have months left on their contract could be leaving the club this season as well. By the end of the summer, Leicester City fans could be watching a whole new starting XI.

Leading the way among players with months left who could leave are James Maddison and Harvey Barnes. Leicester are reportedly looking to cash in on both players as they could rake in around £80 million in transfer fees.

Nigerian internationals Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi are also on the list for a possible transfer in the summer.

Iheanacho was crowned the club’s player of the season after many impactful appearances from the bench during Brendan Rodgers tenure and a number of important goals and assists that kept giving the Foxes a fighting chance until the last day of the season.
