Lees-Melou Close to Comeback After Brest’s Tough Start

Stade Brestois has had a tough beginning to their 2024/25 campaign. Coming off a strong previous season, the expectation was always that replicating such success would be difficult. Key departures over the summer, including Lilian Brassier, Martín Satriano, and Steve Mounié, have further complicated matters. After the first four matches in Ligue 1, Brest find themselves 14th in the standings, managing only one win alongside three losses. However, a recent midweek victory over Sturm Graz in their first-ever UEFA Champions League appearance has provided a much-needed morale boost.

Lees-Melou Nearing Return

One of Brest’s biggest challenges this season has been the absence of their most influential player from last year, Pierre Lees-Melou. Voted Get French Football News’ Ligue 1 Player of the Season for 2023/24, the midfielder played a pivotal role in Brest’s success. However, his campaign was cut short in April when he sustained a fibula fracture, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

The road to recovery has been longer than initially anticipated, but Brest manager Eric Roy shared some positive news. “The encouraging part is that his condition is improving and he is getting closer to being match-fit. He’s feeling less pain now,” said Roy. While Lees-Melou is not fully there yet, the signs are promising. He has resumed training with the squad for the past two weeks, although still refraining from fully striking the ball.

Final Step in Recovery

Roy emphasized that Lees-Melou’s return is now largely dependent on how the player feels. “He’ll let me know when he’s 100% ready,” the manager stated, hinting that the player’s full recovery hinges on overcoming this last hurdle. The manager noted that the final phase of Lees-Melou’s rehabilitation involves regaining the ability to hit the ball with power, something the player is currently building up to. Brest will certainly hope that Lees-Melou’s return can further strengthen the squad and lift their Ligue 1 campaign.
