Lacazette named captain for France’s Olympic squad

In a significant move, Alexandre Lacazette, 33, has been appointed as the captain of France’s Olympic football team. Despite not playing for the national team since 2017, the experienced forward, who has three goals in 16 matches for Les Bleus, will lead the squad in this unique tournament. The Olympic competition, which allows only three players over the age of 23, has opened the door for Lacazette to don the French colors once more.

Leadership role at club and country

Lacazette, who also serves as the captain for Olympique Lyonnais, expressed his excitement at a press conference. He described the opportunity given to him by manager Thierry Henry as a “one in a lifetime” chance. His leadership at the club level has evidently influenced Henry’s decision to hand him the armband for the Olympics, underscoring Lacazette’s valuable experience and leadership qualities.

Unexpected captaincy change

Originally, it was anticipated that Lucas Chevalier would lead the team as captain. However, Lille OSC decided not to release the goalkeeper for the tournament, which falls outside the FIFA calendar, allowing clubs the right to retain their players. This decision prompted the selection of Lacazette as captain, highlighting the challenges national teams face in assembling their squads for the Olympics. Notably, other clubs like Real Madrid have also chosen to keep their players from participating in the competition.
