Kyle walker could be on his way out of Manchester City

Reports suggest that Manchester City captain Kyle Walker could leave the club in the January transfer window.

The 34 years old England international Kyle Walker, joined Manchester City from Tottenham in 2017. He has won six Premier League titles and was part of the squad that triumphed over Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final.

This season has been tougher for both City and Walker. The loss of Rodri to injury has coincided with a slump in both the Premier League and Champions League, with Walker’s presence in Pep Guardiola’s lineup being inconsistent.

The versatile defender has frequently been linked with a return to Sheffield United, the club where he began his career. While Walker’s contract with City is set to run until the summer of 2026, he could depart before then.

The Mail reports that Walker is considering his options. He is not alone in this, as Matheus Nunes and James McAtee are also said to be weighing the possibility of looking for opportunities elsewhere.

Walker played 20 minutes in City’s last match against Leicester, contributing to Guardiola’s team securing just their second league clean sheet since October. The victory moved them back above Bournemouth into fifth place, though they still have work to do to break into the top four.

There has been interest from abroad, with AC Milan among the clubs that have previously considered a move for Walker. However, it is believed that he has been focused on a potential return to Bramall Lane.

“I’ll go until my legs don’t want to go,” Walker told the BBC back in 2021 “Until they go I’ll keep running. I made it very clear I want to go back and play for Sheffield United.”

“I started there, played there from when I was six or seven years old. If I am dropping down and becoming a burden, obviously not. But as long as I am still enjoying it, I’ll keep doing it.”

Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League last season but are on course for an immediate return. Chris Wilder’s Blades are currently second in the Championship, just two points behind leaders Leeds United after 24 matches.

In December, the club was also the focus of a takeover, with COH Sports committing to restore the team to the top tier of English football. Following the £100m takeover, COH’s Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy expressed their support for manager Chris Wilder.

“Like all Blades fans, we want to see the club competing in the top-flight of English football consistently, not just on a one-off basis, and we have been encouraged by the strong start to this season,” they said in a statement. “The team has been performing strongly and we’re committed to supporting the management team to continue this progress.”
