Kieran Trippier announces retirement from England duty

Newcastle United’s defender, Kieran Trippier, has officially announced his retirement from international football. The 33-year-old full-back, who has been a pivotal figure for the England national team, confirmed his decision through a heartfelt message on social media. Trippier was a trusted player under former England manager Gareth Southgate, often featuring in the left-back position, despite being naturally suited to the right side of the defense.

This summer, Trippier played a crucial role for England during Euro 2024, starting in six matches. With Manchester United’s Luke Shaw battling injuries, Southgate turned to Trippier, who stepped up admirably. However, Trippier was benched for the final, as Southgate opted to take a gamble on Shaw’s fitness. Reflecting on his international career, Trippier expressed his immense pride in representing England, earning 54 caps and participating in four major tournaments.

Reflecting on a storied International career

Trippier’s journey with the England team began in June 2017 when he made his debut under Southgate. Initially, he was in competition for the right-back position, contending with the likes of Manchester City’s Kyle Walker and Chelsea’s Reece James. As time progressed, Southgate began to deploy Trippier on the left side of the defense, a move that became more frequent due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell.

Throughout his time with the national team, Trippier was a key contributor in some of England’s most significant recent achievements, including reaching two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final. In his farewell message, he expressed gratitude to Southgate, his teammates, and the England supporters for their unwavering support.

At the club level, Trippier’s future with Newcastle United is uncertain. Reports suggest he is considering a move after losing his starting position to Tino Livramento. Livramento, who has been impressive, is also being considered for a spot in Lee Carsley’s England squad, potentially filling the void left by Trippier’s retirement.
