Lloyd Kelly scored deep into stoppage time to secure a 4-4 result for Juventus against Borussia Dortmund after an astonishing second half filled with eight goals. The English defender, who arrived from Newcastle during the summer, had earlier conceded a penalty that allowed the visitors to stretch their advantage to 4-2.
Dusan Vlahovic reduced the deficit in the 94th minute and moments later supplied the cross for Kelly to head home in the sixth added minute. Juventus fought back three times in an extraordinary finale after a first period that had offered little in the way of chances or attacking intent.
This match became only the second Champions League contest to see eight goals scored in a single half, the other being Bayern Munich’s 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb last season.
Reactions from both sides
Juventus head coach Igor Tudor admitted he could barely explain the frantic turnaround. “How do you comment on a match with eight goals scored in the second half? You tell me,” he said. “Joking aside, it’s difficult to explain. In football, it’s never over, and we did well to believe in ourselves until the end.”
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl reflected on the spectacle despite the late setback. “Two teams played outstandingly well in the second half. It went back and forth, it was open, and fantastic for the spectators,” he said. “Overall, I’m actually satisfied with the team’s performance, even if it sounds a bit skewed after the final minutes.”
How the goals came
Karim Adeyemi struck first for Dortmund with a precise finish from the edge of the box. Kenan Yildiz responded 11 minutes later with a curling shot into the top corner to level.
Within two minutes, Felix Nmecha restored Dortmund’s lead by steering a first-time effort high into the net. Vlahovic then equalized after breaking through one-on-one.
Yan Couto made it 3-2 with a driven shot inside the near post, and Ramy Bensebaini converted from the spot after Kelly handled in the area. Vlahovic’s powerful strike went in off the woodwork before he turned provider for Kelly’s dramatic equalizer.
