Barcelona defender Jules Koundé has finalized a fresh five-year deal with the club, ensuring his stay at Camp Nou through June 2030.
The extension, which had already been announced last week, was formally completed on Thursday afternoon when the French international signed the documents in the presence of club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco. Koundé’s prior agreement had been due to expire in 2027, but both sides pushed to settle a new deal before the start of the 2025–26 campaign.
“I’m very happy to renew. It was pretty straightforward. Both the club and I wanted the same thing,” said Koundé, who had already spoken of his wish to reach an agreement during Barcelona’s summer tour. Despite links with Manchester City, his priority remained tied to continuing in Catalonia.
Role in treble-winning season
Koundé was a central figure during Hansi Flick’s debut season as coach, helping Barcelona collect a domestic treble by defeating Real Madrid in the league race and adding both the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
The 26-year-old featured in 53 games across all competitions during 2024–25 and produced a decisive moment in the Copa del Rey final, scoring the extra-time winner that delivered the trophy. Reflecting on his experiences, he highlighted the title-clinching match against Espanyol and his unforgettable 116th-minute goal in the cup final.
Objectives for new season
Looking ahead, Barcelona will attempt to retain their three Spanish titles while targeting success in the Champions League. Koundé, regarded as one of Flick’s most reliable and consistent performers, acknowledged the need to raise standards even higher.
“Every season I aim to be a better player than the last. I’m very demanding with myself. We can improve in many areas, but if I had to choose one, I’d say we need to concede fewer goals,” he explained.
The team has already started strongly in the new campaign, opening with a 3–0 victory over Mallorca. Next up, Barcelona will take on Levante on Saturday, August 23.
