Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has welcomed Jordan Henderson’s return to the England squad, describing it as a “great move” that brings valuable leadership and experience. The 34-year-old Ajax midfielder has been recalled for the first time since November 2023, with newly appointed manager Thomas Tuchel including him in the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.
Henderson, who made his international debut in 2010 under Fabio Capello, has earned 81 caps for England. Tuchel emphasized that the former Liverpool captain represents the qualities the team is striving to establish. Pickford, who has shared the pitch with Henderson at both club and international levels, believes his presence will strengthen the squad as they work toward their goal of winning the 2026 World Cup.
Leadership and winning mentality
Pickford highlighted Henderson’s leadership qualities and winning mentality, which he developed throughout his successful career. The two players have a long-standing connection, having both started out at Sunderland before becoming key figures in England’s major tournament campaigns, including the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 final, and the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals.
Along with Henderson, Newcastle defender Dan Burn has also received a call-up, earning his first chance to represent England at the senior level. Pickford believes that adding experienced players with strong leadership skills will enhance the squad’s competitiveness.
“We’ve come close to success in recent years, reaching finals, a semi-final, and a quarter-final,” Pickford said. “Now, we need to take that final step. Henderson has proven his ability to lead, both as a player and as a captain at Liverpool. His presence will push training standards and improve the overall environment within the team.”
Henderson’s resurgence at Ajax
Henderson made the move to Ajax in January 2024 after a brief spell in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq. Since joining the Dutch club, he has made 38 appearances, playing a key role in their strong campaign as they sit six points clear at the top of the Eredivisie.
Pickford noted that Henderson’s drive to succeed has never wavered. “His determination and achievements come from within. He’s a natural leader, and bringing him back into the squad is a positive decision,” he said.
Although Henderson was absent from England’s Euro 2024 campaign under former manager Gareth Southgate, Pickford acknowledged his importance, recalling how he served as vice-captain to Harry Kane at the 2018 World Cup. While England reached the Euro 2024 final but fell short against Spain, Pickford said it’s impossible to know whether Henderson’s presence would have changed the outcome.
“We got to the final but didn’t win,” he reflected. “Jords is highly respected by everyone in the team. Whether he plays or not, he will always be a leader on the training ground. Having experienced figures like him is crucial for success, and his return can only benefit the squad.”
