Germany defender Jonathan Tah has completed a move to Bayern Munich following the expiry of his contract with Bayer Leverkusen. The 29-year-old has agreed to a four-year deal with the Bundesliga title holders.
“I’m really pleased to be here,” said Tah. “I want to play a key role, give everything in training and matches, and help the team collect silverware.”
Tah spent a decade with Leverkusen, where he was a central figure in the club’s remarkable 2023-24 campaign. Under head coach Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen went unbeaten in the league and lifted both the Bundesliga trophy and the German Cup.
Success at Leverkusen and links elsewhere
During his time at Leverkusen, Tah also helped the club win the German Super Cup last August by overcoming Stuttgart in a penalty shootout. His performances throughout the season attracted interest from several top sides across Europe.
Clubs including Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly monitoring his situation, along with Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. However, Tah opted to remain in Germany and link up with new Bayern manager Vincent Kompany.
Tah’s arrival follows the departure of Eric Dier, who left the Munich club earlier this month to join Monaco in France’s top flight.
International duty and Bayern’s plans
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund welcomed the addition, noting, “Jonathan brings both international pedigree and top-level ability. He’ll quickly become an important part of our backline.”
Since his senior debut in 2016, Tah has earned 35 caps for Germany. He is currently involved in the national squad preparing for the Nations League semi-final against Portugal, with a potential final against either France or Spain just days away.
Bayern concluded the 2024-25 season as champions of Germany, finishing well ahead of second-placed Leverkusen by a margin of 13 points.
