Italian journalist backs Tonali to leave Newcastle with Real Madrid tipped as potential destination

Sandro Tonali looks set to end his sojourn in England with a move to Spain on the cards for the Italian midfielder, according to a journalist from his home country.

The 24-year-old Italy national football team midfielder whose grudge-filled transfer to St. James’ Park in 2023 was well publicised has done all he can to be professional in the two seasons he has spent wearing the colours of the Toons.

He spent some time away from football after being pronounced guilty of breaching a number of gambling rules but Newcastle United fans and the club’s administration are generally happy with his performance, which continues to justify the €70 million they paid to AC Milan for him.

He is now a mainstay in Eddie Howe’s side and regarded as one of the better midfielders in England. His performances have also helped him win the trust of the Italy national team handlers as he is now one of the first names on the team sheet in every international break since his return to football.

However, there is talk in Italy about the player’s journey at Newcastle United coming to an end because of reported interest from the world’s biggest club.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the source of these reports, said: “I don’t know if he could return to Italy in June, but I think Tonali will leave Newcastle: I think there could also be an important international market for him.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Real Madrid could take him, but [Manchester] City could do it too. Sandro is a player who, beyond a possible return to Italy – because he could be happy to return – could have an international outlet on the market.”

Di Marzio’s comments stem from reports of Real Madrid looking to do away with Aurelien Tchouameni, one of their big midfield signings who, despite his many bright spots and versatility, is seen as below the pecking order in the club’s current hierarchy.

Tonali, however, is reportedly content with life at Newcastle and is focused on making sure that the team finishes strong this season. The club does not have any plans of listening to offers for him, either.

This means that Real Madrid will have to offer the Magpies something they cannot refuse in terms of transfer fees to further cement the former Brescia man as the most expensive Italian footballer of all time.
