Inzaghi: Thuram Playing Through Pain

Marcus Thuram’s recent dip in form has been attributed to an ankle injury that has plagued him for weeks, according to Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi. The French forward has been dealing with the problem since February 10, when he was forced off early in the match against Fiorentina after appearing to struggle with discomfort.

Despite initial efforts to rest and rehabilitate, Thuram was fast-tracked back into the squad for a crucial fixture against Juventus. While he managed to make a return, his overall performance has since suffered, with the lingering effects of the injury limiting his effectiveness on the pitch.

Struggles on the Pitch

Thuram, who has been Inter’s leading scorer this season, has seen his goal output decline significantly since the beginning of the year. His latest goal, which came in the Champions League against Feyenoord, was only his second in 13 matches across all competitions in 2025. Even in that game, he appeared to be struggling physically, particularly when sprinting.

The 27-year-old missed a league match against Genoa before returning for the clash with Napoli in March. However, he was withdrawn in the second half after an underwhelming display, further highlighting his fitness concerns.

Inzaghi’s Admission

Speaking ahead of Inter’s second-leg encounter with Feyenoord, Inzaghi acknowledged that Thuram has been playing through pain. The striker has been relying on painkillers and injections to remain available during a crucial period for the team.

“Thuram—there’s no point hiding it—has been struggling with an issue for a month now, which causes him difficulties,” Inzaghi stated. “He can’t train as he used to and has been playing with painkillers and injections. He never holds back and always helps us, but we have to assess the situation.”

With key matches ahead, the club faces a difficult decision regarding whether to continue pushing Thuram or allow him the necessary recovery time to regain full fitness.
