Inzaghi leaves Inter Milan after Champions League final loss

Simone Inzaghi has left Inter Milan by what the club described as a “mutual agreement” just three days after a heavy 5-0 defeat to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League final.

The 49-year-old Italian, who took charge of the Serie A side in 2021, has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. His exit follows a meeting held with club executives on Tuesday.

In a farewell statement, Inzaghi said, “The moment has arrived to say goodbye after four years, during which I gave my all.” He also expressed appreciation for the supporters, saying, “To the millions of Nerazzurri fans – thank you for standing by me in both joy and difficulty. I will carry those memories with me forever.”

Four-year spell ends with six trophies

During his time at San Siro, Inzaghi collected six titles, including one Serie A championship, two Coppa Italia wins, and three Supercoppa Italiana victories. He led Inter to two Champions League finals, but both ended in disappointment – first a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in 2023 and then the recent heavy loss to PSG.

Inter also narrowly missed out on winning the 2024-25 Serie A crown, finishing just one point behind Napoli. Despite domestic and continental successes, pressure mounted following the loss in the European final.

Inter president Giuseppe Marotta praised Inzaghi’s efforts, commenting, “I want to thank him for his dedication, hard work, and the honest discussions that led to this decision. Only when you share the daily pursuit of success can such an open dialogue take place.”

Future uncertain as Inter prepares for Club World Cup

Inzaghi’s departure comes just ahead of Inter’s involvement in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, set to be held in the United States from June 14 to July 13. Interestingly, Al-Hilal – Inzaghi’s potential next destination – will also feature in the tournament.

The club did not name a successor immediately but emphasized that the decision was made in agreement with the outgoing coach. Inzaghi leaves after a spell that brought both silverware and emotional highs and lows for the fans.
