Manchester City’s Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva discussed his team’s challenging campaign during an interview on TF1’s Téléfoot. The defending Premier League champions have experienced an unusually difficult season, with six league losses already, more than Bournemouth and Fulham. Despite injuries to key players like Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne, Silva believes excuses won’t suffice to explain their struggles.
The Impact of Injuries on City’s Form
Silva acknowledged the influence injuries have had, particularly highlighting Kevin De Bruyne’s absence. “For me, Kevin is the best player in City’s history,” Silva stated, emphasizing the Belgian’s importance to the team. However, he pointed out that City had managed to secure two Premier League titles in the past, even when De Bruyne was sidelined for extended periods.
“Of course, we’re much better with players like Kevin and Rodri, but injuries can’t be the sole reason we’re struggling,” Silva added. He stressed the need for the team to perform regardless of individual absences, underlining that a club of City’s stature cannot rely on any single player to succeed.
Championship Hopes Fading
Currently eighth in the Premier League standings, City trail leaders Liverpool by a significant 15 points. Silva expressed doubt about the club’s chances of retaining their title for a record fifth consecutive season. “I never believe anything is over in football, but thinking about winning the league now isn’t realistic. We need to focus on the next game, not on being champions,” he admitted.
Upcoming Challenges
Manchester City are set to face Ipswich Town this Sunday in the league, followed by a critical Champions League clash against Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. Silva and his teammates aim to turn their season around, starting with these pivotal fixtures.
