“I’m at the perfect place for my career,” new Liverpool signing Szoboszlai

Liverpool are rebuilding their midfield expertly in preparation for a challenging 2023/24 season with their signing of Dominik Szoboszlai on Sunday.

The Hungarian free-kick expert follows the addition of Alexis Mac Allister to the Reds’ midfield in what has been rated as one of the best midfield rebuilds by many Premier League experts. Jürgen Klopp has also rated the signing of the 22-year-old highly and has expressed his excitement about what Szoboszlai brings to the squad and the midfielder has also stated that he joined the perfect place to advance his career.

Speaking with the club’s official website, the former Red Bull Salzburg midfielder said: “I was really happy [about Liverpool’s interest] but still I stayed calm because I didn’t want to be too early happy. First, when the boss called me, I felt, OK, it can be a really good thing. In the end, yes, everything was perfect.

“[Liverpool is a] really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me, it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.”

Szoboszlai was also asked about the relationship he has built in the short while with Jürgen Klopp, which was key to his choosing to come to Liverpool. He said that he thought the German tactician was one of the world’s best coaches and it made sense to work with him. “As I said I think in 2020, [he is] one of the best coaches in the world,” he answered. “How he acts next to the pitch – like he would [be] playing with the guys – [I] liked it really a lot.

“Also how he did in the last years, what he achieved with this club, [I] was also really impressed. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Liverpool have now added another player who came through Red Bull’s football program. Sadio Mané, who had a stint in the Premier League after RB Salzburg before making it at Liverpool was the first, followed by Naby Keita who went from Salzburg to Leipzig then Liverpool. Szoboszlai is the latest in that Red Bull to Liverpool pipeline and fans will hope that he comes good, just as the last two did.

Youngster Fabio Carvalho moved to Leipzig to replace the Hungary international but his move is a loan deal with no option to buy. Reds fans can look forward to a sharper team in the 2024/25 season when the Portugal youngster returns from Germany to play alongside Szoboszlai and the new team that Klopp is building to once again challenge Pep Guardiola in England.
